Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea has met South Sinai Governor Khaled Fouda to discuss upgrades to the South Sinai Governorate’s industrial development plans.

This is set to maximise handicrafts across the governorate, and to develop the industry in a way that contributes to creating more job opportunities for the governorate’s residents.

Gamea said that the meeting tackled the latest developments related to the establishment of the Abu Zenimah Industrial Zone, one of the most promising projects in the governorate.

The minister added that Abu Zenimah is rich of minerals, which allows for high added-value industries to be established. It will ensure that exports of these products can be made as well.

She pointed out that the meeting also dealt with establishing craft areas in cities across the governorate, producing unique handicrafts for which South Sinai is famous. This is especially as these products are widely sought after by incoming tourism to South Sinai.

“We agreed to give a 50% on exhibiting fees to female handcrafters participating in the ‘Torathna’ (Our Heritage) exhibition in October 2020,” the minister noted.

For his part, Fouda said that the governorate is keen to maintain communication and coordination with all relevant ministries and government agencies, to promote investment and economic activities in South Sinai.

Fouda and Gamea discussed updates on a project to develop and market products from the Saint Catherine area. The project would see the creation of a new brand for these products that reflects the city’s identity, history, culture and nature.

Additionally, the two sides discussed the possibility of cutting interest on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (MSMEDA)-provided loans for livestock and poultry projects in the governorate. The proposal would see the interest cut to 5% instead of 10%, as well as dealing with these projects in a similar manner to industrial projects
