A monthly allowance will begin in September for teachers and school heads who have completed three- to six-month training programmes at the Egyptian Military Academy, as part of a government drive to improve the selection and training of education staff.
President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi issued the directive during a meeting with Education Minister Mohamed Abdel Latif and Egyptian Military Academy Director Mohamed Salah Al-Turki, the presidency said in a statement.
The meeting reviewed the results of admission tests for the fifth phase of the Education Ministry’s teacher recruitment programme, as well as plans to improve training for new and existing education staff.
The presidency did not disclose the value of the monthly allowance or the number of teachers and school heads eligible to receive it.
Officials also reviewed a specialised programme launched at the military academy in cooperation with Harvard University to train around 220 government school heads and education leaders from across the country.
Abdel Latif said the ministry was also working with Japan’s Hiroshima University to train teachers as education development leaders who could help transfer aspects of Japanese educational experience to Egyptian schools.
Al-Sisi called for greater investment in teacher development and school leadership, including training in management and systems thinking, as well as greater cooperation with international educational institutions.
Abdel Latif also said programming and artificial intelligence had been introduced for first-year secondary school students and would be taught to second-year students in the baccalaureate system’s engineering and computer science track.
Presenting the results of his participation in a UNICEF Executive Board meeting in New York, the minister said measures to reduce classroom overcrowding and address shortages of teachers in core subjects had helped raise student attendance to 87%.
The government is seeking to expand the use of technology and artificial intelligence across the education system while strengthening teacher and school leadership capacity, the presidency said.
