Egypt’s exports to international complexes amount to EGP 339.2bn, versus EGP 605bn of imports in 2016: CAPMAS

Egyptian exports to international complexes in 2016 amounted to EGP 339.2bn, versus EGP 604bn of imports, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

In its bulletin on trade between Egypt and the world, CAPMAS explained that Egypt is a member of several international complexes, including the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD), the COMESA, the Group of 15 (G-15), the Arab Free Trade Area (AFTA), and the Group of Eight Developing Islamic Countries (D-8), next to other complexes in which Egypt is not included, such as the European Union (EU), EFTA, NAFTA, ASEAN, and Mercosur.

According to CAPMAS, Egypt’s exports to the complexes in which Egypt is a member amounted to EGP 260.6bn in 2016, versus EGP 171.4bn in 2015—up by 52%.

Egypt’s exports to the AFTA topped the rankings, with exports of EGP 100bn in 2016, up 57% from EGP 63.7bn in 2015. It was followed by the ESCWA group with a total value of exports at EGP 81.7bn, up from EGP 47.8bn—marking an increase of 71.1%.

The D-8 exports tailed the list, amounting to EGP 18.3bn, up by 39.6% from EGP 13.1bn in 2015.

On the other hand, Egypt’s imports from these complexes amounted to EGP 280.9bn in 2016, up by 21.4% from EGP 231.5bn in 2015.

Egypt’s imports from AFTA reached EGP 80bn, registering an increase of 12.6bn, compared to EGP 71.1bn in 2015, followed by the G-15 with imports totaling EGP 84.7bn in 2016, which is 30.4% higher than the EGP 64.9bn in 2015.

COMESA came last, with imports standing at EGP 6.2bn, versus EGP 4.5bn in 2015—up by 35.6%.

Regarding trade with the international groups that Egypt is not a member of, CAPMAS reported total exports worth EGP 78.6bn, up from EGP 63.7bn in 2015—an increase of 23.4%.

Egypt’s exports to the EU came first, with exports at EGP 57.4bn, up from EGP 45.7bn in 2015—an increase of 25.6%. It was followed by NAFTA, which imported goods from Egypt worth EGP 11.6bn in 2016, up from EGP 13.3bn in 2015—down by 12.6%.

The Mercosur group came last, with the total exports from Egypt reaching EGP 1.3bn in 2016, versus only EGP 0.8bn in 2015—an increase of 66.2%.

Imports from theses complexes reached EGP 323.1bn in 2016, versus EGP 280.6bn in 2015—up by 15.2%.

Egypt’s imports from the EU came first, with a value of EGP 207.7bn in 2016, versus EGP 183.4bn in 2015—marking an increase of 13.2%, followed by NAFTA with imports of EGP 39.3bn in 2016, versus EGP 36.4bn—up by 8%.

EFTA tailed the list with imports from there valued at EGP 9bn, up by 21.7% from EGP 7.4bn in 2015.
