Egypt opens exhibition of artefacts seized before smuggling at Prince Muhammad Ali Palace Museum

Mostafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, inaugurated on Sunday a temporary exhibition of the antiquities that were seized at the Egyptian ports during the previous years, before they were smuggled out of the country, at the Prince Muhammad Ali Palace Museum.

The inauguration was attended by Moamen Othman, Head of the Museums Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Osama Talaat, Head of the Islamic, Coptic and Jewish Antiquities Sector,. Amal Siddik, Director General of the Manial Palace Museum,  Sherif Saeed, Director General of Historical Museums in the Museums Sector, and a group of leaders from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

He added that the Supreme Council of Antiquities is witnessing an extraordinary boom in the presence of integration between its various sectors. Where this exhibition is the best evidence of the concerted efforts of the various sectors, pointing out that there are other seizures of non-Egyptian artifacts being announced, similar to the delivery of 176 antique coins to four countries at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, and he also indicated that there are a number of archaeological projects that are being completed in the antiquities Islamic, Coptic and Jewish sectors.

For his part, Professor Moamen Othman, Head of the Museums Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, indicated that this exhibition was organized by the Central Administration of Ports and Archaeological Units in Egyptian Ports, in cooperation with the Prince Muhammad Ali Palace Museum in Manial, and it is scheduled to continue for a month, and among the exhibited pieces are those of the museum’s holdings Which was dismissed by the Museum’s Examination Committee, in support of the show’s scenario.

Professor Hamdi Hammam, Head of the Central Department of Ports and Archaeological Units in Egyptian Ports at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said that among the most prominent pieces that were displayed was a silver jug and basin of Princess Tawheed, daughter of Khedive Ismail, decorated with floral and geometric motifs, and a table with a pictorial view of a musical band surrounded by a golden metal frame decorated with motifs. Prominent vegetation extends along the legs, a white marble bust of King Fuad I, and the cradle of King Farouk made of gilded wood and decorated with geometric and floral motifs, on both sides of which is a monogram of King Farouk surmounted by the royal crown.
