Al-Sisi speaks with British PM on Sharm El-Sheikh travel ban

Egypt has been requesting that British and Russian flights resume after airport security revision

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and British prime minister Theresa May discussed the current travel ban on flights to Sharm El-Sheikh during a telephone conversation Wednesday, the presidency said.

In a press statement, the presidency said that both sides “agreed to continue working closely to resume UK flights to Sharm El-Sheikh”, taking into consideration the Egyptian government’s continued efforts to improve security measures at the airport.

Egypt has been requesting that British and Russian flights resume after bans imposed against the backdrop of the terrorist claimed attack on a Russian aeroplane, which crashed over the Sinai Peninsula in October 2015, killing more than 200 people.

In order to lift the travel bans, Egyptian authorities have cooperated with British and Russian counterparts to improve airport security measures after its tourism industry severely suffered. Egypt has also announced the finalisation of the investigative report on the Russian plane incident.
