Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s support for Libya’s territorial unity, the unification of its institutions and the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections during talks with Libyan National Army commander Khalifa Haftar on Wednesday.
The meeting was also attended by Libyan National Army Chief of Staff Khaled Haftar, Libya Reconstruction and Development Fund Director Qassem Haftar, and Egyptian General Intelligence Service chief Hassan Rashad.
Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy said Al-Sisi welcomed Haftar’s visit and underscored the deep ties between Egypt and Libya and the importance of strengthening their longstanding relations.
Al-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s position that Libya’s unity and territorial integrity must be preserved while efforts continue to unify the country’s institutions and hold presidential and parliamentary elections.
He also reiterated Cairo’s support for Libya’s security and stability and for initiatives aimed at achieving these objectives, stressing Egypt’s interest in promoting security, development and prosperity in its neighbouring country.
The talks also addressed opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation and strengthen the partnership between Egypt and Libya.
Haftar praised Egypt’s efforts to promote peace, security and stability across the region, particularly in Libya, according to the presidency.
He also expressed support for initiatives aimed at achieving stability and preserving Libya’s unity, while stressing his commitment to continued coordination with Egypt to address shared challenges and advance Libya’s development.
