A military officer and three soldiers were killed Thursday morning in an explosion which targeted a military vehicle, announced official armed forces spokesperson Mohamed Samir.

Another three soldiers were injured by the planted bomb as the military team was conducting a security raid in the city of Rafah in North Sinai.

“Sometimes planted bombs are easier than direct attacks by militant groups and that is why there are continuous security checks in different towns,” said Maha Salem, military reporter at state-run Al-Ahram media. In statements to CBC Extra channel, she added that the army is mainly in control of most areas and border locations.

The incident took place as Egypt marks the anniversary of the 23 July 1952 Revolution, which was led by the armed forces against the royal family in Egypt and eventually brought Gamal Abdul Nasser to power a couple of years later.
