Egypt on Sunday condemned the continued Israeli escalation in the occupied West Bank, including repeated settler incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque under Israeli police protection and restrictions on the movement of Palestinians.
The Foreign Ministry also rejected statements by Israeli officials calling for an expansion of operations in the West Bank and for measures that would undermine the Palestinian Authority.
Egypt called for an end to unilateral and escalatory measures and urged respect for the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem, a position Cairo has also reiterated in previous joint statements concerning Al-Aqsa Mosque and the city’s holy sites.
The ministry reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The statement came amid heightened tensions in the West Bank and Jerusalem, while the Palestinian presidency also warned on Sunday of increasing incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque and restrictions on Palestinian worshippers.
