Five political movements called on university administrations, in a joint statement Tuesday, to allow imprisoned students to sit their final exams..

The movements include the Revolutionary Socialists, Al-Midan Students Club, Strong Egypt party students, 6 April Students Front and 6 April movement. The student members called on university administrations, professors and students to “empower the students who are currently detained or imprisoned to have their final exams, especially that some of them could be expelled finally if they missed this year’s final exams”.

They suggested that exam committees are either sent to prison cells, or that the transfer of imprisoned students to exam locations at the universities is secured.

As the second semester examinations approaches, the number of university students imprisoned in Egypt has reached 3,000. Of this figure, only 1,000 were jailed during the first semester with 164 of them released, according to the statement released by the movements on Tuesday.

MA, a former detainee, previously told Daily News Egypt that during his detention last year, he missed the first semester exams which delayed his graduation for a further year. However, he also added that he was lucky to have the second semester exams during his detention at the liman of Turah.

Deadly clashes between security forces and students have become frequent during the past two years following the political unrest. This has urged at least 15 universities across Egypt to sign contracts with Falcon Private Security Firm with their presence now on campus.

According to an earlier Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) report, over 300 students have been arrested since the start of the academic year on 11 October 2014.
