EDECS Group, a Middle East and Africa (MEA)-region EPC contractor, has secured a contract from DP World to redevelop seven operational yards at Terminal 1 of Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam Port, with construction works already underway.
The project covers seven cargo and material-handling yards spanning a combined 90,000 square metres, along with associated gates and utility infrastructure.
Under the contract, EDECS will carry out the design and construction of the yards, including infrastructure upgrades to support cargo storage and handling and digital yard management systems. The scope also includes a port-wide fire protection network and high-mast lighting system covering facilities beyond the initial project area.
Dar es Salaam Port is Tanzania’s largest port and handles more than 90% of the country’s international maritime trade. It also serves as a key maritime gateway for seven landlocked countries in East and Central Africa.
The port has surpassed 30 million tonnes in annual throughput, while Terminal 1 recorded its highest monthly container throughput in July 2026, handling 46,582 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), compared with 13,779 TEUs in May 2024.
Hussein El Dessouky, Chairman and Managing Director of EDECS Group, said the company’s teams are currently working on the project’s key operational areas and delivering infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving port safety and efficiency.
Martin Jacob, CEO of DP World Dar es Salaam, said the terminal’s modernisation is intended to improve trade connectivity and logistics efficiency across East and Central Africa, adding that DP World had recognised the pace of civil works being carried out by EDECS.
The contract adds to EDECS Group’s portfolio of marine, port and logistics infrastructure projects across the Middle East and Africa.
The company has more than three decades of experience in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and works across areas including sea terminals, logistics parks, marinas, roads, bridges, railways, water infrastructure and buildings.
DP World operates and manages Terminal 1 at Dar es Salaam Port, which handles general, bulk and containerised cargo. The terminal is undergoing modernisation aimed at increasing capacity and improving operational efficiency.
