Egypt’s Gypto Pharma City and Djibouti-based Bacha Group have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening pharmaceutical security and expanding the reach of Egyptian-made medicines across the Horn of Africa and East Africa.
The agreement was signed during an official visit by a high-level Djiboutian delegation led by Hibo Bacha, Chairperson of Bacha Group, Vice Chairperson of the Egyptian-Djiboutian Business Council, and President of the Djiboutian Businesswomen Association.
The discussions focused on strengthening strategic cooperation between Egypt and Djibouti in the pharmaceutical sector, building on the longstanding ties between the two countries and their shared commitment to advancing sustainable development and healthcare security across Africa.
During the visit, Gypto Pharma showcased its integrated manufacturing capabilities and advanced pharmaceutical production facilities, highlighting their compliance with international quality standards and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
The two sides also reviewed the pharmaceutical needs of the Djiboutian market and other East African countries, paving the way for the registration and direct supply of a range of high-quality Egyptian pharmaceutical products to meet the region’s growing healthcare demand.
Beyond exports, the discussions explored opportunities to gradually localise parts of the pharmaceutical manufacturing process by leveraging Bacha Group’s logistics and industrial hub in Djibouti.
The initiative is expected to strengthen pharmaceutical supply chains, enhance value chains and foster industrial integration between the two countries.
The partners highlighted Djibouti’s strategic importance as a logistics and trade gateway linking African, Arab and international markets, positioning it as a key hub for expanding Egyptian pharmaceutical exports to the Horn of Africa and member states of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Commenting on the agreement, Amr Mamdouh, Chairperson and Managing Director of Gypto Pharma City, said the partnership represents an important milestone in strengthening Egyptian-African cooperation in the pharmaceutical industry.
He said Gypto Pharma is committed to supporting Egypt’s strategy of deepening cooperation with African countries, stressing that providing safe, effective and high-quality medicines is a cornerstone of healthcare security and sustainable development.
Mamdouh described Djibouti as a strategic partner because of its unique geographical location and pivotal role in regional trade and logistics, adding that the partnership aims to establish a successful model for pharmaceutical and industrial integration while expanding the regional footprint of Egyptian medicines.
For her part, Hibo Bacha praised Gypto Pharma’s advanced manufacturing and technological capabilities, describing the company as a reliable partner capable of meeting the pharmaceutical needs of African markets.
She said the partnership marks an important step towards strengthening economic and healthcare cooperation between Djibouti and Egypt while supporting the supply of high-quality pharmaceutical products to Djibouti and East African markets. She added that both sides look forward to translating the MoU into practical projects that enhance pharmaceutical security and economic integration between the two countries.
The agreement aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to strengthen its industrial and economic presence across Africa, support regional integration, and reinforce the position of Egyptian pharmaceuticals as a key contributor to healthcare security and sustainable development across the continent.
