Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi held separate phone calls on Sunday with Haitham bin Tariq of Oman and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, as regional tensions escalated following a wave of military strikes across the Middle East.

According to the Egyptian presidency, Al-Sisi discussed the latest developments with Sultan Haitham, strongly condemning the targeting of Duqm Port earlier in the day. He reiterated Egypt’s long-standing position that regional crises must be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means, warning of the grave consequences of further escalation and the risk of the region descending into wider instability.

Al-Sisi also commended Oman’s mediation efforts, particularly its role in facilitating negotiations between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear programme, underscoring Muscat’s importance in containing tensions and promoting diplomatic solutions.

Presidential spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy said Al-Sisi expressed Egypt’s full solidarity with Arab states subjected to Iranian attacks, stressing Cairo’s categorical rejection of any threat to the security, sovereignty or stability of Arab countries. He affirmed Egypt’s support for measures taken by those states to safeguard their security and protect their citizens.

For his part, Sultan Haitham expressed appreciation for Egypt’s consistent backing of peaceful conflict resolution and its efforts to defuse the current crisis, highlighting the depth of the historic and fraternal ties between Egypt and Oman. Both leaders agreed to maintain close consultation and coordination to help curb further escalation and preserve regional stability.

In a separate call, Al-Sisi spoke with Al-Sudani following attacks that targeted Iraq earlier in the day. The Egyptian presidency said the president reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, expressing solidarity with the Iraqi government’s stance rejecting attempts to draw the country into the widening confrontation.

The spokesperson added that the call reflected a shared Egyptian-Iraqi position on the need to prioritise dialogue and diplomacy in pursuit of political solutions to the ongoing crisis. Al-Sudani thanked Al-Sisi for Egypt’s steadfast support for Iraq’s sovereignty and unity.

The calls came after an Iranian missile barrage targeted several Gulf cities in response to US and Israeli strikes on Iran, further heightening tensions across the region.
