Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi underscored the strategic role of the Egyptian Petrochemicals Company in localising the production of key industrial materials, praising its efforts as a public-sector enterprise to manufacture PVC and specialised high-quality grades used in vital applications, including secure documents such as national ID cards, bank cards, and certain banknotes.

Badawi made the remarks during the company’s general assembly meeting to approve its investment budget for FY 2026/2027. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel Al-Wazir; Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat; and Minister of Local Development Manal Awad.

During the meeting, Ahmed Mowaqqa, Chairman of the Egyptian Petrochemicals Company, reviewed efforts to resume and localise production of PVC K57, which had been halted for nearly 30 years, with the aim of meeting state demand. He said the company’s high product quality has driven increased demand in industrial applications requiring strict technical specifications.

Badawi reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to providing full support to the company to expand production and secure necessary inputs. He noted that the availability of feedstock from natural gas rich in derivatives over the past year has contributed to higher production rates at the company and across the wider petrochemicals sector.

Mowaqqa also outlined the main features of the company’s investment budget for the next fiscal year and reviewed operational results for the first half of FY 2025/2026. He said the company achieved its highest PVC production level in five years, reaching 41,000 tonnes, and announced the completion of a feasibility study for a new PVC production line with an annual capacity of 120,000 tonnes.

He added that demand has increased for one PVC grade used in medical supplies manufacturing, which has received positive evaluations from the Unified Procurement Authority and major medical supplies producers, leading to its adoption. The approved production plan for caustic soda during the first half of the fiscal year totalled 60,000 tonnes.

On safety and environmental performance, Mowaqqa confirmed full compliance with occupational safety standards, with no recorded accidents, fatalities or injuries. He also highlighted the qualification of company drivers and transport contractors to obtain safe driving certifications, the installation of a solar power unit atop the company’s marketing building, and the development of a plan to establish a 25-MW solar power plant.
