Egypt and Slovakia on Sunday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for technical cooperation in the fields of environmental protection and climate change, Egypt’s environment ministry said.

The MoU was signed by Manal Awad, Egypt’s Minister of Local Development and acting Minister of Environment, and Tomáš Taraba, Slovakia’s Minister of Environment, on the sidelines of the 8th Cairo Water Week.

“The cooperation is a continuation of Egypt’s efforts to strengthen international partnerships to face environmental and climate challenges and support the exchange of expertise with friendly countries,” Awad said in a statement.

She added that the MoU aims to develop and enhance cooperation between the two sides based on equality and mutual benefit. Priority areas include climate change mitigation and adaptation, environmental planning, and the protection of nature and biodiversity.

Cooperation will be implemented through various activities, including joint seminars, workshops, and meetings between research institutions, as well as the exchange of visits between delegations and trainees from both sides.

The agreement also encourages the involvement of relevant organisations and institutions from both countries, including academic and economic bodies, to establish and promote cooperation in environmental protection and sustainable development.

The central department for international cooperation at the Egyptian Ministry of Environment and the department of foreign affairs at the Slovak Ministry of Environment will be responsible for implementing the MoU.

The 8th Cairo Water Week is being held from Oct. 12-16 under the theme “Innovative Solutions for Climate Resilience and Water Sustainability.”
