Egypt’s Healthcare Authority has agreed to move forward with a programme to train 20 Egyptian doctors in Türkiye in robotic surgery, catheterisation and advanced cardiac interventions, as the two countries seek to strengthen cooperation in healthcare.
Ahmed El-Sobky, chairperson of the Egypt Healthcare Authority and general supervisor of the Universal Health Insurance, discussed the programme with Türkiye’s Ambassador to Cairo Salih Mutlu Şen as part of follow-up efforts following a recent authority delegation visit to Türkiye.
The training will be conducted under a tripartite agreement involving the Healthcare Authority, Koç University Hospital and Medtronic, with the aim of transferring advanced medical expertise and technologies to Egyptian healthcare facilities.
El-Sobky said Egypt would seek to benefit from Koç University Hospital’s expertise, particularly in robotic surgery as well as cardiac and kidney procedures, while developing Egyptian medical professionals capable of introducing and sustaining advanced technologies across the authority’s facilities.
The two sides also discussed expanding partnerships with Turkish healthcare groups, including Esteworld and Acibadem, and benefiting from their expertise in healthcare facility management, particularly in South Sinai.
Medical tourism was another focus of the talks, with the Healthcare Authority seeking to draw on Türkiye’s experience in the sector to attract more international patients to South Sinai.
Discussions also covered Türkiye’s experience in developing and managing large-scale medical cities, including Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital and major medical complexes in Ankara. Egypt is interested in benefiting from this experience in managing high-capacity healthcare facilities, patient flows and hospital operations.
The two sides also explored public-private partnership models for healthcare investment and the development and operation of medical facilities, alongside cooperation on green and mobile hospitals and sustainable healthcare infrastructure.
Şen expressed Türkiye’s readiness to support partnerships between the Egyptian authority and major Turkish medical institutions and facilitate direct engagement with Koç University Hospital and Medtronic.
Both sides agreed to continue coordination to translate the outcomes of the recent visit into concrete programmes and projects covering medical training, technology transfer, healthcare investment and medical tourism.
