Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed in Cairo to discuss strengthening cooperation between Egypt and the UN, regional developments, and proposals to reform the international organization.
According to a statement from Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the UN, the multilateral system, and adherence to international law and the UN Charter. He praised Secretary-General António Guterres and his deputy for their leadership, commending their commitment to defending international law and the principles of the Charter.
Abdelatty underscored the importance of the UN’s role in maintaining international peace and security, stressing respect for international humanitarian and human rights law—particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza and developments in the occupied West Bank. He outlined Egypt’s efforts to contain regional crises, reduce tensions, and promote political and diplomatic solutions, while emphasizing the need to expand international cooperation to address global challenges and advance sustainable development goals.
The talks also addressed reform of the UN system. Abdelatty called for strengthening international financial institutions and multilateral development banks to provide affordable, sustainable financing for developing countries, tackle debt challenges, and support climate action without imposing additional burdens on vulnerable economies.
For her part, Amina Mohammed praised Egypt’s role in supporting UN efforts regionally and globally, highlighting Cairo’s contributions to conflict resolution and stability. She commended Egypt’s participation in peacekeeping operations and humanitarian initiatives, reaffirming the UN’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Egypt across multiple sectors.
