Sports Minister rejects holding Olympic Committee elections before amending Sports Law

A conflict emerged between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Egyptian Olympic Committee over the latter’s elections scheduled for April 2022.

The Olympic Committee closed the door for candidacy last Sunday and started examining nominations to ensure their compliance with the regulations. Meanwhile, Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy rejected all these procedures, and sent an official letter to the Olympic Committee requesting that elections be delayed until after holding all sports federations’ elections and amending the Sports Law.

The potential candidates for the Egyptian Olympic Committee elections were as follows: Hisham Hatab, Equestrian Federation (chairperson), Ahmed Nasser, Triathlon Federation (chairperson), Alaa Gabr, Arch and Arrow Federation (first deputy), Yasser Idris, Swimming Federation (second deputy), Sherif El-Erian, The Modern Pentathlon Federation (General Secretary), Muhammad Abdulmutallab, the Basketball Federation (Assistant Secretary-General), Abdulaziz Ghunaim, the Boxing Federation (Treasurer), Abdel Moneim Al-Hussaini, the Archery Federation (Member), Al-Basil Abdullah, the kite surfing Federation (Member), Ayman Shweita, the Canoe and Kaik Federation (Member), Sherif El-Qamati, Rowing Federation (Member), Taymour Abu Al-Khair, Golf Federation (Member), Moataz Ashour, Table Tennis Federation (Member), Sherif Kamal, Hockey Federation (Member), Mohamed Abdel Maqsoud, Weightlifting Federation (Member), Aya Madani, member of the IOC Players Committee.
