Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi received his Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday in Cairo. The two sides discussed bilateral relations, as well as regional and international issues of mutual concern.

The talks tackled ways to further strengthen bilateral relations, especially economic and trade, in line with the level of distinguished political relations between the two countries. It also discussed ways to exchange experiences and information and encourage joint investments in sectors with a competitive advantage in both Egypt and Romania.

According to Egyptian Presidency spokesperson Bassam Rady, the two leaders agreed on the importance of working on holding the fourth round of the joint committee concerned with developing all aspects of bilateral economic and technical cooperation.

Iohannis’s visit to Egypt came in line with the convocation of the Egyptian-Romanian Economic Forum which is to be held on the sidelines of the current visit of the Romanian president. It aims to create a link between businessmen and representatives of major companies from the two countries.

Rady stated that the two presidents held a session of bilateral talks, which was followed by an expanded session that included the delegations of the two countries.

Moreover, the meeting dealt with a number of regional issues, as the two presidents stressed the importance of concerted efforts to reach peaceful solutions to these issues in a way that preserves in the first place the entity of the national state.

Both leaders expressed aspiration to hold the elections in Libya in December 2021, which would allow the Libyan people the opportunity to choose a unified government that preserves the security, stability, unity and sovereignty of Libya. They emphasised the importance of adhering to United Nations decisions related to the withdrawal of all mercenaries and foreign forces from the country.

Additionally, the Egyptian and Romanian presidents discussed the Syrian crisis and its impact on the stability of the region, and the current efforts of the UN envoy to reach a peaceful settlement of this crisis. The meeting also dealt with the latest developments in efforts to revive the peace process in the Middle East and achieve calm between the Israelis and the Palestinians, as they agreed on the importance of finding a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in accordance with the decisions of international legitimacy.

During the talks, Al-Sisi showcased Egypt’s efforts in combating terrorism and extremist ideology. Views were also exchanged on the phenomenon of illegal immigration, where the president affirmed Egypt’s keenness to combat this phenomenon, pointing to the Egyptian efforts to successfully address the movement of illegal immigrants across the Mediterranean.

For his part, the Romanian president expressed appreciation for the Egyptian efforts in combating terrorism and extremist ideology and countering illegal immigration. He stressed Romania’s keenness to continue cooperation with Egypt at various levels to address the challenges facing both sides of the Mediterranean.
