Paid ‘protesto’ cases in Egypt rise 13.7% in 2019: CAPMAS

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) has issued its annual bulletin on statistics for “protesto” cases and bankruptcy judgments in 2019.

The most important indicators are as follows.

The number of paid “protesto” cases reached 5,446 in 2019, compared to 4,791 cases in 2018, reflecting a 13.7% increase of 655 cases.     

The debt value of paid “protesto” cases reached EGP 103.5m in 2019, compared to EGP 53.5m in 2018, a 93.4% increase of EGP 50.0m. 

The number of non-paid “protesto” cases reached 11,035 cases in 2019, compared to 12,500 cases in 2018, an 11.72% decrease of 1,465 cases.         

The debt value of non–paid “protesto” cases reached EGP 3.2bn in 2019, compared to EGP 1.0bn in 2018, reflecting a 219.2% increase of EGP 2.2bn.

Cairo ranked first in term of paid “protesto” cases, recording 1,467 cases, or accounting for 26.9% of the total. It was followed by Giza governorate which recorded 761 cases, or a percentage of 14.0%, and then Menoufiya governorate with 611 cases, or a percentage of 11.2 % of the total number of cases.

Giza governorate ranked first in terms of the debt value of paid “protesto” cases, where debt value reached EGP 47.2m, or 45.6% of the total. This was followed by Cairo Governorate, where debt value reached EGP 22.7m, accounting for 21.9% of the total, then Menoufiya governorate, where debt value reached EGP 5.1m, or 4.9% of the total value of debt.

Cairo also ranked first in terms of the number of non-paid “protesto” cases, accounting for 1,497 cases, or 13.6% of the total. This was followed by Menoufiya governorate, which accounted for 1,049 cases, or 9.5% of the total, then Minya governorate with 916 cases, or 8.3%, of total number of cases.

Sharqeya governorate was ranked first in terms of debt value of non-paid “protesto”, where debt value reached EGP 1.8bn, or 56.9%, followed by Menoufiya governorate, where debt value reached EGP 0.5bn, or 15.1% of the total. This was followed by Alexandria governorate, where debt value reached EGP 0.2bn, or 6.4% of the total value of the debt.

The number of bankruptcy provision cases reached two cases in 2019, compared to four cases in 2018, reflecting a decrease of two cases.

The debt value of bankruptcy provision reached EGP 340.3m in 2019, compared to EGP 8.3m in 2018, reflecting an increase of EGP 332.0m.
