Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has stressed that the Egyptian government is proactively engaged in raising the standards of living via an economic and social reform programme.

On Saturday, Madbouly reviewed a Cabinet Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) report on the efforts exerted by the government during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

He asserted that the reform programme has contributed to advancing economic performance indicators and achieving sustainable development.

Madbouly also addressed the challenges Egypt faces with the exchange rate, unemployment, public debt and the deficit of the general budget. These have motivated local and international investors, which see Egypt as a promising market, to pump their investments into the country.

The Prime Minister pointed out that, while the government was reaping benefits of the economic reform, the ongoing pandemic has caused negative global health, economic and social repercussions.

He added that the Egyptian government was keen to improve the healthcare system before the pandemic, explaining that this sector has always been one of its priorities.

The government has worked on developing preventive programmes since the start of the coronavirus outbreak in Egypt, raising citizen awareness to curb the spread of the virus.

The government has worked to combat the virus through tests and tracking of people who were in direct contact with coronavirus patients. They have also carried out several preventive measures, including applying social distancing, according to an IDSC report.

Speaking on the pandemic’s negative effects, the report highlighted that the government has taken many economic measures to mitigate its repercussions.

These have especially been in the most affected sectors, including tourism.

The report also tackled the government’s social protection measures to mitigate the pandemic’s socio-economic effects. It noted that the government was keen to take the necessary measures to alleviate the consequences, especially for the most vulnerable groups including irregular workers, in addition to organising special flights to repatriate Egyptians stranded abroad.
