Egypt’s COVID-19 rates within expectations: President’s health adviser

Egypt reported on Monday 189 new coronavirus (COVID-19) cases and 11 new deaths, raising the country’s total cases to 3,333 and 250 deaths. A total of 821 cases have recovered, according to the Health Ministry.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Egypt remains within the expected range, according to Mohamed Awad Tag El Din, the President’s adviser on health and prevention affairs in a Monday media statement.

Tag El Din added that Egypt’s treatment protocol for the coronavirus is one of the best currently in effect. It is also necessary for citizens to commit to the government’s precautionary measures against the virus’ further spread, he said.

The adviser explained that state decisions preventing gatherings are aimed at protecting citizens and preserving the country’s general state of heatlh.

Tag El Din said that the Ministry of Health is looking at all treatment options for the coronavirus, but that the same treatment protocols cannot be used for all infected cases.

He added that the experimental Japanese anti-viral drug Avigan, which has been suggested for the treatment of the coronavirus, has been used for treating viruses in Japan since 2014. Clinical trials of Avignan have begun in Egypt, with hopes that the drug will prove good results.

Saad Mekki, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health in Daqahleya, announced that 16 coronavirus cases, including children, were discharged from hospital on Monday.

Kafr Gaafar village in the city of Basyoun, Gharbeya governorate, was placed under quarantine on Sunday after 12 coronavirus cases were detected there. The cases were taken to an isolation hospital, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

The measures have placed 800 families, or a total population of 13,000 villagers, under quarantine, according to Sameh Habib, MP for Basyoun, in a Facebook statement on Sunday.
