64.6% self-sufficiency of red meat in 2016: CAPMAS

The Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced that Egypt’s self-sufficiency of red meat reached 64.6% in 2016.

This came in the agency’s annual bulletin about production, foreign trade movement, and the available agricultural commodities for consumption in 2016.

The bulletin stated that the average per capita consumption of red meat decreased by 29.4%, due to a decrease in production and decreased imports of beef over the previous year, reaching 9.6 kilograms in 2016 compared to 13.6 kilograms in 2015.

Furthermore, “the self-sufficiency rate of poultry and bird meat reached 93.7% in 2016, while, the average per capita consumption of poultry and bird meat decreased by 5.6%, to reach 10.1 kilograms compared to 10.7 kilograms,” according to the CAPMAS bulletin.

On the other hand, the bulletin reported that the self-sufficiency rate of wheat reached 47.7% in 2016 and the average per capita consumption of wheat reached 137.8 kilograms in 2016 compared to 141.1 kilograms in 2015, a decrease of 2.3%.

“The self-sufficiency rate of rice reached 99.7% in 2016 and the average per capita consumption of rice decreased by 11.3%, to reach 34.7 kilograms compared to 39.1 kilograms in 2015,” according to the annual bulletin.

Furthermore, the self-sufficiency rate of vegetables reached 103.4% in 2016, and the average per capita consumption of vegetables reached 86.3 kilograms in 2016, compared to 93.1 kilograms, a decrease of 7.3%.

Moreover, “the average per capita consumption of fruits decreased by 1.6%, to reach 62.6 kilograms in 2016 compared to 63.6 kilograms in 2015. Meanwhile the self-sufficiency rate of fruits reached 98.4% in 2016,” according to CAPMAS.
