A police officer was killed and two others were injured after being attacked by anonymous gunmen in Al-Arish in North Sinai, the Ministry of Interior stated.

The ministry added that anonymous gunmen near the second police station of Al-Arish opened fire on police officer Tamer Sadek, killing him and injuring two others.

The ministry also said it is completing a surveillance operation of the area, among other efforts to arrest the gunmen. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

North Sinai has been a focal point of confrontation between the Egyptian security apparatuses and Islamic militants, of which several claim to be affiliated to Islamic State (IS). Since 2013, following the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, the militants have launched several deadly attacks against army stationing points.
