The Ministry of Interior revealed on Friday that the explosion that injured two citizens and damaged two shops in Giza’s Kerdasa was not a terrorist attack but rather the result of a registered criminal improperly storing homemade bombs.

A statement from the ministry said that a 42-year-old restaurant owner stored the bombs in his shop before they detonated. The statement claimed he used the homemade explosives in fights with neighbours.

The suspect was detained on Thursday shortly after the explosion and was ordered by the prosecution to be detained for 24 hours pending investigations. The prosecution renewed his detention for four more days.

A source from the prosecution said that the bombs exploded due to the hot weather.

Bombings have become a frequent occurrence across Egypt, with a militant insurgency at its peak in North Sinai and other attacks sparingly occurring in Greater Cairo and other governorates.
