Egypt, Somalia coordinate return of eight Egyptian sailors released after kidnapping

Somali Ambassador to Egypt Ali Abdi Awari said that coordination between Egyptian and Somali authorities is underway to complete arrangements for the return of eight Egyptian sailors who were recently released after being kidnapped off the coast of Somalia.

Awari said he had contacted the eight sailors to check on their well-being and confirmed that they are all safe and in good condition.

The Ambassador explained that, following ongoing high-level communications between Egypt and Somalia, the eight Egyptian sailors who had been kidnapped aboard the vessel M/T Eureka off the coast of Somalia’s Puntland region since May 2 have been released.

He confirmed that coordination between the relevant Egyptian and Somali authorities is continuing, with joint efforts underway to complete the necessary arrangements to ensure the sailors’ return home.

Awari said the two sides are following up on all procedures related to their return in coordination with the Egyptian Embassy in Mogadishu and Mohamed Salah, Ambassador of Egypt to Somalia.

He added that the Somali side is keen to continue cooperation and coordination with the Egyptian authorities until the sailors safely return to Cairo.

The Ambassador also expressed his appreciation for the Egyptian and Somali efforts that contributed to ensuring the sailors’ safety and securing their release.
