The Egyptian Centre for Public Policy Studies (ECPPS) recently launched an indicator for small and medium enterprises.

Yasmeen Shaker, a researcher at the centre, said the aim of the indicator is to provide information regarding the business atmosphere for companies, to enable them to know the challenges they face and to put forth plans to overcome them.

It also aims to define the economic and investment environment in each of the 22 governorates included in the indicator.

Head of the economic research department at ECPPS Ahmed Abdel Wahab said the centre launched the official website for the Egyptian governorates’ performance regarding SMEs. The website aims to create an investment map for business leaders, for both the challenges and potentials in each governorate.

The website provides the demographic details of each governorate and monitors its economic status. It also monitors the most important obstacles business leaders face and their opinions in each governorate. It allows young entrepreneurs to compare between the governorates to find out the best in business environment for SMEs.

According to Abdel Wahab, the indicator revealed that Cairo is the best governorate for SMEs, followed by Menufiya and Sohag.

He said most of the problems for business leaders lie in the difficulty in finding suitable funds and the lack of information for identifying the funding bodies for their sector and the mechanisms to receive funds.

The indicator helps decision makers to resolve the problems for business leaders, which will help improve the sector’s investment environment in the upcoming period.

ECPPS is a non-profit NGO that was established in 2007. Its mission is to offer public policies aiming to amend the Egyptian legal and economic system.  It works through a civil approach based on research and intellectual activity to outline the Egyptian market’s reality and possible ways to fix it.
