An oil spill was reportedly discovered in Al-Bouhiya Canal near Al-Sinbellawin city in Daqahileya governorate, according to a statement released by the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA).

According to the statement, the spill is 90cm wide extends along 6 km and contains ‏solar gasoline mixed with oil.

The environmental agency ordered the regional office to further investigate the accident and to inspect a nearby nutrition factory suspected of involvement, said the statement.

The regional water company closed five water outlets as a precautionary measure until further analysis is carried out.

Egypt witnessed a state of emergency earlier this year when an estimated 500 tonnes of phosphate submerged near the Upper Egypt governorate of Qena, after a barge transporting the chemical material capsized after colliding with the Dandara Bridge.
