Unidentified gunmen shot dead First Lieutenant Sherif Ahmed Mostafa Ghali in the Mediterranean city of Damietta.

Ghali was in his car accompanied by his fiancé in the early hours of Monday morning when masked gunmen opened fire on the vehicle outside the Future Club, reported state owned Al-Ahram.

The army officer was shot in the chest and had died by the time he was transferred to the Al-Azhar University hospital. Ghali’s fiancé survived the attack, which is now being investigated. It is unclear what the motive for the attack was.

Egypt’s security forces personnel and infrastructure have been the targets of militant attacks since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. Much of the violence has been focused in the volatile North Sinai region but incidents of bombings and shooting have occurred in the Greater Cairo area and the Nile Delta region north of the capital.
