An online activist group has threatened President Mohamed Morsy with “cyber warfare” unless he responds to demands to withdraw his constitutional declaration.

A video released on Tuesday, showed a person wearing a Guy Fawkes mask while a computerised voice delivered a statement directed at Morsy. The group claimed, “not only will we attack your organisation’s websites; Anonymous will also make sure that you stand exposed against your people as well as the international community.”

Anonymous is not a fixed group but rather a loose collective that challenges surveillance, censorship and in this case human rights.

The statement said Anonymous believe the people of Egypt “are being denied their basic rights and human liberties.” It observed, “Morsy has repeatedly shown a lack of care about the core values of democracy,” adding that “his latest declaration has given him the powers of a pharaoh and appointing him as the new God of Egypt.”

Anonymous spoke directly to Morsy, saying, “the decisions you made have caused the death of two young Egyptians in addition to hundreds more injured. In addition your organised propaganda is portraying your legitimate opposition as if they are opposing the revolution, which you are destroying.”

The statement ended by telling Morsy that he has a chance to prevent Anonymous from carrying out its threat, calling on him to “lend an ear to the claim of freedom from your people and the hostilities will cease.”

Anonymous’ Operation Egypt campaign was launched during the 25 January revolution. The New York Times reported on 3 February 2011 that anonymous had shut down Egyptian government websites in support of the revolution.
