ALEXANDRIA: Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated independent candidate Sobhy Saleh said he was attacked on Sunday afternoon by “National Democratic Party thugs” in front of the Abys Mosque, in Al-Raml district.

“I was choked and attacked with swords by NDP thugs,” Saleh told Daily News Egypt.

His attackers were seen walking with NDP candidate Abdel Salam Mahgoub, he added.

Saleh said that he was rushed to the Abys Hospital to take refuge, where he was kept for two hours against his will before he was allowed to leave.

“The ambulance and police car [that I called for] are the ones that helped me get out of the hospital,” said Saleh.

Saleh had no visible injuries but his shirt was torn.

“I was left short of breath after their attempt to choke me,” Sobhy said.

Ahmed Atef, son of NDP candidate in Al-Raml District Sayed Atef, attempted to help Saleh and other MB supporters out of the hospital, but Saleh said that it was an attempt by the NDP to contain the situation.

“I will comply with their wish and I won’t file a complaint or a police report,” Saleh said, “because I know that any witnesses who testify to this incident will be arrested after the elections.”
