CAIRO: Workers from the Aboul Seba’ textiles company in Mahalla have suspended their sit-in after receiving promises that a decision about their futures with the company will be made on Oct. 5.

Workers began the sit-in on Sept. 18 in protest at unpaid wages. The protest was the third of its kind in three months.

Aboul Seba’ workers El-Sayed Rizq El-Shishtawy told Daily News Egypt that workers have been receiving payments of LE 200 from a fund. Most workers, Aboul Seba’ said, are supposed to receive salaries of about LE 1,000 per month.

Aboul Seba’ says that workers agreed to break up the sit-in after company manager Ismail Hussein told them a decision about their futures will be made on Oct. 5.

Only a fraction of the company’s 2,000 strong workforce are currently actually working. According to El-Shishtawy, “only employees they [company management] need are being allowed to work. They’ve thrown the rest of us out into the street”.
