CAIRO: In two separate incidents Monday, an Egyptian police officer was killed when a fellow soldier’s gun went off near the border, and an Israeli tourist was stabbed by a Libyan citizen in Nuweiba.

Central security soldier Magdy Abdel-Hady Mohamed Hamza, 21, was shot in the chest when a fellow soldier’s gun accidentally went off as they were standing guard at a border post 20 km south of the Rafah border crossing.

The other soldier, Ismail Salah Hussain, was cleaning his gun when it went off, hitting Hamza in the chest. He was taken to the Rafah General Hospital but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

In the Nuweiba camp Mahashy, Israeli tourist Rosen Wilf, 41, was stabbed in the face and chin by a Libyan laborer at around 4 am. The assailant fled but dropped his passport. Sinai security authorities identified him as a Libyan citizen named Osama Al-Mokhtar Ahmed Gheith.

Wilf was vacationing with his family when the stabbing occurred. He refused treatment in Egypt and was transported to Taba and then to the Israeli Yoseftal Hospital in the port of Eilat, where he received stitches before being released.
