Man digs up apartment to make off with artifacts; revenge by fire

Cairo: A young man jumped into the Nile and died. Oddly enough, the death was neither a suicide nor a murder. The man simply wanted to prove to his beloved that he was ready to do anything for her. Hawadith Al Youm reported that Ayman Mohammed (23) was overcome by his passion for his girlfriend as they were walking along the Corniche. Ayman claimed he could set himself on fire or soar through the heavens to bring her a star. As they came closer to the Nile he proved the sincerity of his words by throwing himself into the deep Nile waters.

The same tabloid also reported that a conscript was stabbed in the heart several times on a train from Zifta by one of five thugs who were molesting some young girls. The incident occurred when the conscript tried to defend the helpless girls. The compartment of the train was left drenched in blood following a fight between the conscript and the thugs. Initially four of them were arrested and they then guided the Zifta CID to the the killer.

Also according to another report by Akhbar Al-Hawadith, a man was arrested after he was found guilty of carrying out archaeological excavations in his own apartment. His neighbors reported the man to the police after he was seen digging deep into the ground of his apartment in a way that threatened the building’s safety. The building, located in Ain Shams, had unknowingly been built on an archaeological site and the digging was obviously aimed at laying hands on artifacts. A policeman heard a strange sound in the apartment following the neighbors’ complaint and went to investigate. He tripped over something as he entered the culprit’s place – the object turned out to be the head of an ancient Egyptian statue.

A student was arrested after he attempted to set fire to his beloved’s wedding party, Al-Masri Al-Youm reported. A jilted lover, Ahmed Hussein Mahmoud (20), was deeply affected when his sweetheart’s father, also his neighbor, refused to allow him to marry the girl because he was a student. To retaliate, he became determined to turn her wedding into a funeral. With the help of a friend he darted through the crowds that attended the party, splashing kerosene. But both were caught and beaten up before they could strike a match.

In a different report in Al-Masri Al-Youm an engaged couple were remanded into police custody after they confessed to having murdered an elderly man in Omraniyya because they wanted to get married with his money. Iman Tawfik (16), who was employed as a maid for the elderly man, conspired with her fiancée Amr Ahmed (23) a microbus driver to kill Mohamed Abdou (85), the girl’s employer. The couple was arrested four days after the murder.

An unemployed man was arrested along with an iron trader for having raped a clothing factory worker, said Al-Ahram daily. Both conspired to bring the girl to one of the warehouses belonging to the trader. In another report the daily highlighted a report that a two-year-old boy had fallen to his death from the third floor while his mother was busy preparing a meal.

Al-Akhbar daily reported a number of road accidents. A family of four was run down by a speeding bus in the Gesr Al-Suweis area. The father, mother and their three-year-old daughter died on the spot. The older daughter, however, was taken to the hospital after suffering serious injuries.

The daily also reported that the Cairo-Alexandria road was blocked for an hour near Qaha when two sisters died after being hit by a car as they were attempting to cross the road. In other news, a father and his two daughters jumped to safety before a speeding train crushed their vehicle, reported Al-Akhbar. The vehicle’s tire burst as the father was driving across the railway tracks in Kafr Gomma, Mansoura. When the car broke down on the tracks, the three had to react quickly, shocked as they were by the oncoming train.
