The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) announced that domestic liquidity in Egypt’s banking sector stood at EGP 15.261trn in June 2026, down from EGP 15.330trn in May.
Data released by the CBE showed that the money supply declined to EGP 4.492trn in June, compared with EGP 4.502trn a month earlier. Currency in circulation outside the banking system also fell to EGP 1.649trn from EGP 1.737trn.
Non-government local currency deposits
The CBE said total non-government local currency deposits at banks operating in the Egyptian market increased to EGP 10.347trn in June 2026, compared with EGP 10.168trn in May.
Local currency demand deposits rose to EGP 2.842trn from EGP 2.765trn. Of the total, the public business sector accounted for EGP 112.870bn, the private business sector held EGP 1.478tn, and the household sector accounted for EGP 1.252trn.
Meanwhile, local currency time deposits and savings certificates increased to EGP 7.505tn, up from EGP 7.402trn. The public business sector held EGP 77.237bn of these deposits, while the private business sector accounted for EGP 422.378bn and the household sector for EGP 7.004trn.
Banks’ foreign currency deposits
On the other hand, CBE data showed that total non-government foreign currency deposits declined to the equivalent of EGP 3.264trn in June 2026, compared with EGP 3.425trn in May.
Foreign currency demand deposits fell to the equivalent of EGP 827.608bn from EGP 853.973bn. The public business sector accounted for EGP 42.987bn of these deposits, while the private business sector held the equivalent of EGP 549.708bn and the household sector accounted for the equivalent of EGP 234.972bn.
Foreign currency time deposits and savings certificates also declined, reaching the equivalent of EGP 2.436trn in June, compared with EGP 2.571trn in May.
The public business sector held the equivalent of EGP 171.151bn of these deposits, while the private business sector accounted for the equivalent of EGP 551.424bn. The household sector remained the largest holder, with foreign currency time deposits and savings certificates equivalent to EGP 1.714trn.
