Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, chaired a meeting on Tuesday with the Board of Directors of the General Organization for Teaching Hospitals and Institutes (GOTHI) to review regulatory updates and strategic development plans.

Key topics included the promotion of medical professionals, the enhancement of training programmes, and initiatives to raise the overall quality of healthcare services across the country.

Abdel Ghaffar reaffirmed GOTHI’s pivotal role in Egypt’s healthcare system, noting its distinctive integration of academic, clinical, and research missions. He praised the efforts of board members and medical teams across GOTHI’s institutions for their contributions to improving patient care.

The meeting covered several internal matters, including procedures for senior medical promotions—such as Educational Consultant, Associate Consultant, and Educational Fellow roles—as well as appointments under Article 80 of Republican Decree No. 470 of 2017. A comprehensive report detailing GOTHI’s achievements in Q1 2025 was presented, alongside updates on financial and administrative oversight. The Minister emphasized the importance of reinforcing governance mechanisms to ensure institutional accountability and efficiency.

To enhance the effectiveness of medical training, Abdel Ghaffar directed full coordination with the Supreme Council of University Hospitals to launch a joint residency training programme. This unified framework will enable residents to rotate across multiple facilities for no less than six months, offering broader clinical exposure and skill development for early-career doctors.

He also called for the expedited completion of ongoing development and construction projects at various GOTHI facilities, underscoring the Ministry’s commitment to supporting improved infrastructure and professional environments in teaching hospitals.

The board additionally reviewed a proposal to amend residency placement criteria for dental graduates to ensure parity with medical graduates. The changes would streamline access to graduate studies programmes by eliminating mandatory wait periods.

Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Ghaffar, President of GOTHI, expressed his appreciation to the Minister for his ongoing leadership and support, which he said continues to drive improvements in both healthcare delivery and medical education throughout the organization.
