Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population Hala Zayed met, on Monday, with the Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit, to discuss support for Arab states during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The meeting came on the sidelines of the 54th session of the Council of Arab Health Ministers.

During the meeting, Zayed congratulated Aboul Gheit for his re-election as the Arab League Secretary-General. The meeting also dealt with the mechanism of continuing to provide medical support to Arab countries, especially those suffering from economic challenges in light of the COVID-19 crisis.

They also discussed means of strengthening cooperation between Arab countries to quickly respond to the needs of countries suffering from health challenges and provide them with medical support.

Moreover, Zayed submitted a letter to About Gheir on behalf of the Council of Arab Health Ministers, in her capacity as head of the Executive Office of the Council.

The letter stressed the importance of preserving the affiliation of the Arab Board of Health Specializations (ABHS) to the Arab League’s Council of Arab Health Ministers. This comes particularly as it plays a vital role in graduating highly qualified doctors in Arab countries.

The minister also highlighted the need to provide technical, financial, and supervisory support to the council to ensure the development of its work.

She added that the council was established in 1978, and more than 53,000 highly qualified Arab doctors have received qualifications from it in various medical specialisations.
