Daily News Egypt aims to cover the news as impartially as possible. We strive to treat our readers, news sources, advertisers and our society fairly and openly. Thus, as Egypt’s only independent newspaper in English, Daily News Egypt team and members of its news department and editorial page staff share an interest in avoiding conflicts of interest or an appearance of a conflict.
For more than 15 years, men and women of The Times have jealously guarded the paper’s integrity. Whatever else we contribute, our first duty is to make sure the integrity of Daily News Egypt is not blemished during our stewardship.
COMPLIANCE
Daily News Egypt strives to maintain the highest standards of journalistic ethics. It is confident that its staff members share that goal. DNE considers this policy is of very high importance and takes any breaches of the policy very seriously.
These guidelines generally apply to all members of the news and editorial departments whose work directly affects the content of the paper, including those on leaves of absence.
They include reporters, editors, editorial writers, photographers, picture editors, art directors, artists, designers, graphics editors and researchers.
Every Daily News Egypt staff member is expected to read this document carefully and to think about how it might apply to his or her duties. A lack of familiarity with its provisions cannot excuse a violation; to the contrary, it makes the violation worse.
Conflict of interest
Personal Gains
DNE staff must report stories with integrity and impartiality and must not be influenced by any personal or professional gain that they may achieve from a third party by reporting any fact or story in any particular way.
It is unacceptable for DNE staff to accept money or anything else of value for the promotion of a particular story or links, particularly if the relationship is not disclosed. Daily News Egypt pays for expenses when its team members meet news sources or travel to cover them. In some business situations and in some cultures, it may be unavoidable to accept a meal or a drink paid for by a news source. In that case, they must make it clear that such gift or expense payment will in no way compromise or influence their judgement or coverage of a particular topic, event or story.
Advertising and Marketing Activities
Daily News Egypt ensures that news and advertising are strictly separate. Accordingly, staff members who deal with either one have distinct obligations and interests and neither group will try to influence the other.
Thus, only members of Daily News Egypt advertising and marketing department are allowed to conduct any advertising deals. Newsroom members of the news department must maintain their disinterest and objectivity by avoiding discussions of advertising needs and goals.
Political and Civic Society Engagement
Daily News Egypt respects the rights of its staff in exercising their religion, voting in elections and taking an active part in community affairs.
This policy doesn’t prohibit these rights, however, Daily News Egypt team members have a duty to avoid the appearance of a conflict. They should never invoke Daily news Egypt name in private activities.
Daily News Egypt editorial team must maintain political neutrality when covering stories, ensuring no political bias. We believe that journalists have no place on the playing fields of politics.
Accordingly, our team members are entitled to vote, but they must do nothing that might raise questions about their professional neutrality or that of Daily News Egypt. That means that they should not campaign or publicly endorse a candidate.
DNE Social Media Policy
In Daily News Egypt we ensure that our social media posts maintain professionalist and protecting privacy.
We ensure that every piece of content posted on our social media outlets is not misleading, deceptive or misrepresents the story at hand.
Daily News Egypt ensures moderation of social media accounts, including comments. It takes action against racist, violent, inciteful, insulting or other negative comments.
When posting any images or videos which appear on our website and social media, gaining permission from the original creator or author is essential.
Plagiarism
Daily News Egypt does not tolerate plagiarism. Our writers must adhere to strict guidelines when using another source for a story and must properly cite the original source.
