President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi said Egypt is seeking to expand its partnership with AngloGold Ashanti, operator of the Sukari gold mine, to cover exploration, technology transfer, and local supply-chain development, as the company announced plans for additional investment in several promising mining sites in Egypt without disclosing the value or timing of the spending.
Al-Sisi made the remarks during a meeting with AngloGold Ashanti Chief Executive Alberto Calderon on the sidelines of the fifth Egypt Mining Forum 2026, attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi, according to a presidency statement.
Al-Sisi said the government was keen to support AngloGold Ashanti’s investments in Egypt and provide an environment that would enable its operations to expand, stressing Cairo’s interest in broadening the relationship beyond the operation of Sukari.
The presidency said the proposed partnership would cover expanded exploration activities, technology and expertise transfer, training for Egyptian workers, development of local supply chains, and efforts to attract additional investment to the mining sector.
Calderon reviewed the company’s operations and expansion plans in the Egyptian market and said Egypt was one of AngloGold Ashanti’s priority investment destinations.
He said the company planned to invest further in several promising mining areas, which could support the discovery and development of new projects similar to Sukari, according to the presidency.
The two sides also discussed expanding AngloGold Ashanti’s exploration programmes, particularly in gold mining. Al-Sisi said the government would provide the necessary support to facilitate the company’s activities as part of Egypt’s strategy to increase mining’s contribution to the economy and attract greater foreign investment.
Earlier, Al-Sisi opened the Egypt Mining Forum, which brought together representatives of governments, international organisations, and major foreign companies operating in the sector.
During the opening session, Al-Sisi said the state was committed to supporting the success of investors and companies operating in mining and other sectors.
The forum featured speeches from officials at the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, AngloGold Ashanti, the Australia-Africa Minerals and Energy Group, the International Council on Mining and Metals, and the World Bank Group, as well as live broadcasts from mining sites across Egypt.
Al-Sisi also opened the exhibition accompanying the forum and toured stands belonging to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and companies including Capital Drilling, Elsewedy Electric, and AngloGold Ashanti.
