Tom Cruise portrays a controversial energy tycoon responsible for a global crisis in the upcoming dark comedy “Digger,” marking a departure from his traditional action roles in his first collaboration with Academy Award-winning Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu.
Warner Bros. recently launched a new phase of the promotional campaign for the project, which industry observers predict will be one of the studio’s most significant releases of 2026 and a strong contender throughout the awards season. The studio unveiled a series of official posters and a full-length trailer, revealing a dramatically different physical appearance for Cruise that contrasts with his decades-long image as a global action star in franchises such as “Mission: Impossible.”
In the film, Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, an immensely wealthy and influential businessman in the energy and oil sector. As the world faces a crisis that threatens the future of humanity, Rockwell attempts to position himself as the sole saviour, despite being responsible for the unfolding chaos.
Blending satire, dark comedy, and political drama, “Digger” explores themes of power, capitalism, and the societal impact of ultra-wealthy individuals.
During the film’s promotional campaign, Cruise described Rockwell as one of the most complex characters he has ever portrayed, stating that it took years of experience and artistic growth to understand the role.
“It took me 40 years to be able to dig through all the layers of this character,” Cruise said.
Director Iñárritu noted that the film’s concept had been developing in his mind for many years. He stated that the collaboration involved several years of discussions and creative development before production began.
“Watching Tom Cruise transform into Digger Rockwell was something I was not prepared for,” Iñárritu said, adding that the actor’s performance represents a different kind of courage and may stand among the greatest challenges of his career.

The official trailer opens with a retrospective of milestones from Cruise’s 46-year career before transitioning into footage from “Digger.” The trailer highlights the psychological, social, and political conflicts experienced by the characters, rather than the traditional action sequences the actor is known for.
Addressing audiences while promoting the trailer, Cruise reflected on his career in the film industry. “For 46 years, it has been my honor to work with countless talented artists and crews to bring these characters, stories, and films to audiences around the world. I look forward to seeing you at the movies this October,” he said.
The latest posters reveal Cruise with grey hair and an older look, reflecting Rockwell’s volatile and controversial nature. Following their release, the images spread across social media, with users describing it as one of the most dramatic physical transformations of his career.
This follows an early marketing campaign late last year that featured teaser posters with the slogan “In Digger We Trust.” That campaign deliberately concealed the character’s appearance, focusing instead on visual symbols connected to the film’s title to generate curiosity.
The ensemble cast features Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Emma D’Arcy, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Sophie Wilde.
Industry observers suggest the film could mark a significant turning point in Cruise’s career as he explores more layered, satirical, and emotionally complex territory.
“Digger” is scheduled for a worldwide release on October 2. The film will open in Egyptian and Arab cinemas on October 1, with regional distribution managed by United Motion Pictures (UMP).
