Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi said on Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump is uniquely positioned to help bring an end to the ongoing war in the Middle East, urging decisive intervention to halt the conflict and limit its far-reaching consequences.
Speaking at the opening of Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2026) in Cairo, Al-Sisi warned that the continuation of the war could have severe repercussions for the global economy, particularly through rising prices for energy, fuel, fertilisers, and agricultural commodities – impacts that would be especially burdensome for developing countries.
He described the current crisis as one of the most significant disruptions to the energy sector in modern history, citing supply shortages, price volatility, and mounting pressure on global supply chains.
Al-Sisi called for intensified international efforts to end the conflict through political and diplomatic channels, stressing that prolonged fighting would further destabilise the region and exacerbate economic challenges worldwide.
The remarks were delivered during the high-level gathering, attended by Nikos Christodoulides and senior executives from major global energy companies.
The president noted that EGYPES serves as a key international platform for dialogue on the future of energy, emphasising the need to scale up production, including renewable energy, to help mitigate the impact of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
He also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to settling outstanding payments owed to international energy companies by June 2026, a move aimed at strengthening investor confidence and supporting continued investment in the sector.
On the sidelines of the event, Egypt and Cyprus signed a framework agreement on natural gas cooperation, aimed at deepening regional ties and linking Cypriot gas fields to Egypt’s liquefaction facilities, further reinforcing the country’s role as a regional energy hub.
