President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met on Sunday with the Heads of African Constitutional and Supreme Courts and Constitutional Councils and expressed his appreciation for the important role of constitutional and supreme courts in Egypt and Africa.

The guests were participating in the sixth High-Level Meeting of Heads of African Constitutional and Supreme Courts and Constitutional Councils which was held in Cairo in the days prior.

During the meeting, the president expressed Egypt’s keenness to organise the conference periodically to support the role of the judiciary in African nations. The meeting also aims to enhance cooperation and exchange experiences between African supreme courts regarding constitutional justice in a way that contributes to establishing justice and democracy and protecting the rights of citizens.

Furthermore, Al-Sisi stressed that judicial efforts have become of particular importance in light of the challenges faced by African countries, especially with regard to citizenship rights, the rights of refugees and migrants, the protection of cultural identity, the rights of peoples to their common natural resources, and economic development efforts.

Al-Sisi further stressed the importance of popular awareness to strengthen the role of law and judicial institutions in order to enable countries to effectively address the challenges that threaten their existence, the most serious of which are extremist ideologies and discrimination among citizens on religious, racial, or sectarian grounds, as well as to preserve their security and stability.

For his part, President of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court Boulos Fahmy stressed the importance of the support provided by Al-Sisi to holding the conference, as well as activating cooperation and the exchange of experiences between African judicial bodies.

He also praised the president’s keenness to consolidate and strengthen awareness of the importance of the independence of the judiciary and to enhance the role played by the constitutional courts in protecting the capabilities of states, laying the foundations for democracy, and advancing development, especially in light of their success in enriching legal and constitutional concepts in Egyptian society.
