We appreciate Russia's position on Ethiopian dam: Sudanese FM

Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Maryam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi has said that her country appreciates Russia’s stance, as a permanent representative on the United Nations (UN) Security Council, regarding the Ethiopian dam.

Russia has said that the council should not allow unilateral measures that harm any country regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Al-Mahdi’s remarks came during a joint press conference with her Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, following their meeting on Monday in Moscow.

The minister said that Sudan “sees great support in this, because unilateral moves that harm Sudan, such as filling the dam, should already be condemned and intolerable”.

She expressed Khartoum’s appreciation for Russia’s support for Sudan in the areas presented to the UN Security Council.

Al-Mahdi pointed out that the talks touched on joint cooperation to bring peace and security to Africa in general, and the important role that Sudan must play in stabilising the situation in Libya, Central Africa and Chad. This also covers the need for Sudan to have a role in bringing peace to Libya in a way that stabilises the region.

She added, “During our closed session, we discussed bilateral issues between the two countries, especially the political, diplomatic and economic aspects, in an in-depth manner.”

“We greatly appreciate the support provided by Russia to the transitional government, which came after a great revolution led by the youth and the Sudanese people, in which women advanced and owned by all the Sudanese people, and we look forward in the coming period for more cooperation and progress,” the minister said.

Al-Mahid also said that Sudan is studying the agreement to establish a Russian logistics centre on the country’s Red Sea coast.

The minister said, “The issue of the logistical support centre is part of agreements signed by the Military Council in 2019, but not yet ratified, and the process of ratification of any international agreement that requires passing through the Legislative Council, and in the absence of the Council currently.”

“This role is exercised by approving the agreement by both councils, the Sovereign Council and the Council of Ministers,” the minister added, “This is the process that is currently taking place with all international agreements that have not yet been ratified, and not only with agreements with the Russian side.”

On the future of Russian companies in Sudan, Al-Mahdi said, “Russian companies will continue to work in the fields in which they operate.”

She noted that Sudan is promoting the recruitment of more Russian companies, banks, and investments to Sudan, because this establishes common interests between the two countries.
