Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the World Bank Group have launched a partnership and national charter to develop the country’s mining sector as part of an initiative covering eight countries.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the ministry said Egypt’s national charter aims to increase the mining sector’s contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) to 6%.
The plan includes legislative and fiscal reforms that have been initiated and implemented over the past two years, improvements to geological data to attract investment, and the development of digital systems and mineral processing centres.
Meanwhile, the World Bank Group and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) are collaborating to strengthen governance, build capacity and attract investment to the sector.
Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi said Egypt is pursuing comprehensive development of its mining sector and creating an attractive investment environment to build a sustainable and competitive industry capable of securing a prominent position on the regional and international investment map.
He stressed the importance of strengthening partnerships and cooperation with the World Bank and international financial institutions to secure financing, attract investment and provide technical assistance.
Namrata Thapar, Global Director for Minerals and Mining at the World Bank Group, emphasised the importance of the partnership with Egypt in supporting efforts to develop its mining sector.
She praised the substantial reforms and clear national vision for transforming the sector that she observed during her participation in the recent Egypt Mining Forum in Cairo.
Thapar also highlighted Egypt’s mineral resources, infrastructure and supportive investment environment as key factors in attracting investment and accelerating the sector’s development.
She added that the developments she witnessed reflected a clear commitment to advancing the sector and maximising the benefits of Egypt’s mineral resources, creating further opportunities for cooperation and partnership with the World Bank Group to support these efforts.
At the global level, the World Bank Group plans to increase its support for the mining sector fivefold to $19bn over fiscal years 2026–2030 through financing and the mobilisation of private-sector investment.
