Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, has affirmed that the Middle East region is facing unprecedented challenges, especially on the security and strategic levels, as some regional countries still engage in practices that harm the national security of all Arab countries.
Aboul Gheit’s remarks came during his speech, on Saturday, in front of the Arab Parliament, in the presence of Ali Abdel-Al, Speaker of Egyptian Parliament, and Abdel-Wahab Abdel-Razek, Speaker of the Egyptian Senate.
Aboul Gheit said that the profound and rapid changes that the Arab region is going through at this time require continued observation, speed in action and performance, and strength in position because periods of change and transformation are usually the most difficult and dangerous in the history of nations.
He added that the working agenda of Arab League is full of major issues, most of them are urgent, including economic,political, and social issues.
He stressed that the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinians to establish their independent state based on the borders of June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, come on top of the challenges.
Aboul Gheit noted that during the current US administration, the Palestinian cause faced fierce attempts to end the two-state solution without presenting a just and sustainable alternative.
He expressed his hope that the coming period will witness serious movement in terms of reviving the negotiation process, with the hope to end the Israeli occupation and establishes a real, sustainable and comprehensive peace agreement in the entire region.
Secretary-General of the Arab League also expressed his appreciation for the role of the Arab Parliament and its distinguished performance, since its establishment.
He congratulated the Speaker of Arab Parliament on establishing the Center for Arab Parliamentary Diplomacy, which is a step towards developing Arab parliamentary diplomatic work.
