Egypt’s cabinet has agreed to extend the period for paying building violation reconciliation fees for a month. The payment period will now last until 15 September 2020.
The cabinet had previously agreed to implement the provisions of Law No 17 of 2019 regarding the reconciliation of some building violations. The move was designed to legalise the status of these buildings, in a way that supports the state’s move to formalise all building work.
Several controls have been put in place to ensure the reconciliation occurs, including the establishment of the one who wishes to reconcile during the term as specified by the law. The party will be able to submit a reconciliation request, accompanied by the required papers, documents and fees. This comes in addition to the amount to be reconciled and paid, which should be submitted with the paperwork, under the reconciliation account.
Some parties involved have, since 15 July, started to pay reconciliation fees, with bank accounts allocated to receive these dues. Reconciliation fees have been estimated at a minimum of EGP 125 per square metre in villages, and EGP 500 in the city up to a maximum of EGP 5,000 .
The government has worked towards easing the payment of reconciliation dues by allowing citizen to pay in equal quarterly instalments, not exceeding a period of three years. The eligibility for the instalment system comes into effect after the citizen has paid at least 25% of the reconciliation fee’s total value, provided that the reconciliation decision is issued after paying all instalments.
