MP Haitham El-Hariri confirms COVID-19 infection

Member of Parliament (MP) from Alexandria, Haitham El-Hariri, has confirmed via a Facebook post on Friday that he has tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The MP said that he reportedly felt symptoms of a mild fever and underwent tests on Wednesday, and that on Thursday morning he reported feeling fatigued. As a result, he headed to a fever hospital, where the positive diagnosis for the virus was confirmed.

El-Hariri apologised for his inability to be present at his office, although he noted that he will be available by phone, with his office remaining open.

The MP is a member of the House of Representatives’ Health Committee and a leader of the leftist 25-30 Alliance.

Several MPs in the House of Representatives have announced they had contracted the coronavirus, of which the first was MP Sherine Farrag. Other MPs who have contracted the virus include Eid Heikal, Nashwa Al-Deeb, Omar Watani, Hisham Magdy, Youssef El-Shazly Mamdouh Moukalled, and Hussein Ashmawi. The MPs have undertaken isolation at private hospitals with many of them having since recovered.

The parliament convened its last plenary session on 16 June, and will resume on 5 July.
