Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres stressed the UN’s reaction to Israel’s intention to annex the settlements or any parts of the West Bank.

In a letter for the Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Abou El-Gheit on Saturday, Guterres said that if Israel continued its plans for annexation of the Palestinian lands, this will close the door for negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians and eradicate the two-state solution.

Guterres’ letter comes as a response to a prior letter from Abou El-Gheit warning from the consequences of the Israeli maneuvers to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic to impose a new status quo in the Palestinian territories and controlling these lands.

He further called upon the UN to take its responsibilities and prevent the Israeli authorities from destabilising the regional security.

For his part, Guterres expressed his concerns over the Israeli plans, saying that any step for West Bank annexation, including Eastern Jerusalem, will be considered as a violation for the international law.

He added that all governments should cooperate for combating the pandemic and taking unilateral steps, raising concerns over the health situation in Gaza strip and Eastern Jerusalem.
