Minister of Communications and Information Technology Yasser Al-Qadi will meet with a delegation from TRANSSION Holdings, owner of Tecno Mobile, in the next couple of weeks to discuss opportunities for locally manufacturing mobile phones, according to an official at the Ministry of Communications.

This comes after meetings with officials from a number of mobile manufacturing companies, like Oppo, to discuss the necessary economic incentives to encourage the local manufacture of mobile phones.

Al-Qadi received the Oppo Egypt CEO accompanied by a delegation of leaders from the parent company in China. They discussed ways to establish the company’s factory in Egypt to meet domestic market requirements and export to the Middle East and Africa.

The Ministry of Communications formed an electronics industry committee at the end of the past year. The committee is chaired by Hossam Osman and includes a number of electronics industry experts, academics, and non-governmental organisations. It will oversee the implementation of the local electronics manufacturing initiative launched by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi in December 2015 at the Cairo ICT 2015 Conference.

This short-term plan aims to develop five key industries, including mobile phone, GPS, LED bulbs (with almost 80 electronic components), local production of screens, and solar power plants. The plan seeks to manufacture solar power plants’ components, such as solar panels, power transformers, and control devices, as well as smart electricity meters.

The Ministry of Communications has allocated EGP 361m to implement the plan.
