President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met with Burundi foreign minister Alain Aimé Nyamitwe on Monday in Cairo to discuss challenges and developments on the African continent.

Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry and the Burundian ambassador in Cairo also attended the meeting.

Terrorism in the region was of primary concern in the meeting, and both countries agreed to cooperate in peace efforts, said presidency spokesperson Alaa Youssef.

Al-Sisi acknowledged bilateral ties between Egypt and Burundi during the meeting and recognised the Burundi government’s efforts in reaching a common ground on the water-sharing agreement between Nile Basin countries.

Egypt intends to support Burundi in retaining its non-permanent seat of Egypt in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), said Al-Sisi.

Similarly, Nyamitwe highlighted political and economic cooperation between Egypt and Burundi and his country’s commitment to increasing cooperation in many fields.

Since his appointment, Al-Sisi has expressed his commitment to giving more attention to Egypt’s relations with African countries, which have deteriorated in recent decades.

Nyamitwe’s meeting comes one day after Al-Sisi’s meeting with Togolese president Faure Gnassingbé, wherein the duo discussed a number of common interests, topped by security issues in relation to the sustainable development of African countries.
