President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met Secretary-General World Tourism Organistion (UNWTO) Taleb Rifai Wednesday in the presence of Egyptian Minster of Tourism Hisham Zaazou.

Al-Sisi stressed upon the importance of tourism as a main source of income for Egypt and local authorities have spared no efforts in securing tourists. A statement issued by the presidential office reported that Rifai praised security standards applied in ports and airports by Egypt.

Egypt is putting constant effort into attracting tourists but the business is currently endangered by the security situation. A Russian plane crashed over Sinai on 31 October 2015, killing over 224 passengers abroad amid unconfirmed reports suggesting a bomb on board caused the crash. Egyptian investigations are still ongoing.

Before that, a military raid accidentally killed a group of Mexican tourists in the Bahariya oasis, claiming they had entered a restricted zone.
